01

System planning and cost

Compare the complete door and management workflow, not only the reader on the wall.

How much does a fob access-control system cost per door?+

A per-door figure can be misleading because the reader is only one component. Door and frame condition, electric locking, egress devices, cabling, controller capacity, power, fire-alarm interfaces, software, credentials and labour all affect the installed cost.

What should be included in an access-control proposal?+

A clear proposal should identify every controlled opening, retained equipment, lock and egress function, credential types, administrator roles, software and recurring fees, backup power, integrations, permits or trade coordination, resident transition, testing, documentation and post-install support.

Can existing doors, strikes, readers, controllers or wiring be reused?+

Sometimes, after testing condition, ownership and compatibility. Reuse can reduce disruption and waste, but an old component should not be retained when it creates an unsupported, insecure or unreliable dependency in the new system.

Can residents keep their existing fobs during an upgrade?+

A phased migration may keep current credentials temporarily when the reader technology, format and security plan support them. If legacy identifiers are easily cloned or incompatible, issuing unique modern credentials can provide a cleaner and safer transition.

Cloud or on-premises access control: which is better?+

Cloud platforms can simplify remote administration and updates, while on-premises systems may reduce cloud dependence and keep more functions local. The right choice depends on connectivity, recurring fees, multi-site needs, data governance, offline behaviour, support ownership and the staff who will administer it.

Can an access-control upgrade be completed in phases?+

Yes, when controllers, credential formats, databases and door operations are designed for coexistence. The plan should define which system controls each opening during every phase and how credentials, logs and emergency procedures transition.

02

Fobs, phones and mobile credentials

A building can support more than one credential type when each method is deliberately configured.

Can a phone be used instead of a key fob?+

Compatible systems can support app unlock, Bluetooth, NFC or a mobile-wallet credential. These methods are not interchangeable, and phone model, reader, platform, subscription and administrator setup determine which option is available.

Can I copy my existing condo fob into Apple Wallet?+

Apple Wallet is not a generic fob-cloning tool. A resident key must be issued through a participating property or compatible access platform; an arbitrary RFID fob cannot simply be scanned into Wallet.

What is the difference between Bluetooth, NFC, app unlock and a wallet credential?+

Bluetooth can support proximity or in-app unlock, NFC usually uses a close tap, an app can send a command through the platform, and a wallet credential is provisioned into an approved mobile wallet. Security, speed, offline behaviour and phone support vary by implementation.

Can residents keep physical fobs as a backup to mobile access?+

Usually, if the selected readers and policy support both credential types. A physical fallback is valuable for residents who do not use compatible phones and for situations involving a lost, dead or replaced device.

03

Security, privacy and troubleshooting

The controller, lock, door and policy all matter after a credential is presented.

What should I do if a condo fob is lost or stolen?+

Report it to the authorized building contact promptly so that exact credential can be disabled and replaced. Do not rely on changing a door code or copying another resident's fob when the system can issue a new unique identifier.

Why does a fob beep or show green but the door stays locked?+

The credential may be accepted while the relay, power supply, strike, maglock, request-to-exit circuit, door alignment or wiring fails. A technician should test the event log and physical release path separately.

Will fob access work if the internet or power goes down?+

Many local controllers can keep validating stored credentials during an internet outage, while remote management or mobile services may stop. Power-outage behaviour depends on batteries, UPS or generator support and the fail-safe or fail-secure lock design.

Are fob and access logs personal information in BC?+

They can be. A strata or business should document why logs are collected, who may view or export them, how long they are kept and how requests or incidents are handled under the applicable privacy obligations.
