Intercom and enterphone guide

Video Intercom & Enterphone Questions

A useful intercom plan starts with the building's existing wiring, entrances, calling method and resident needs. Modern systems can combine video calling, telephone options, indoor stations and controlled visitor entry, but the exact features, recurring costs and outage behaviour depend on the selected platform and property.

Planning an intercom retrofit

Questions councils and owners ask before comparing systems or approving a scope.

How much does a video intercom or enterphone upgrade cost?+

There is no reliable one-price answer without reviewing the site. Entrance count, suite count, existing cabling, door hardware, calling method, network work, elevator or gate integration, software and resident options all affect the scope; a useful proposal should separate installation costs from recurring services.

Should we repair our old enterphone or replace it?+

Repair can make sense when parts, programming access and the underlying wiring remain serviceable and the system still meets resident needs. Replacement becomes more practical when faults recur, support has ended, directories are hard to manage or the building needs video, mobile calling, accessibility options or better integration.

Can an old apartment intercom be upgraded without rewiring every suite?+

Sometimes. Existing multi-conductor, two-wire or telephone-based infrastructure may be reusable after testing, and a mobile-first design can reduce work inside suites; damaged cable, unsuitable topology or required in-suite hardware can still make new cabling necessary.

Can the existing entrance opening, door strike or reader be reused?+

Often some infrastructure can remain, but compatibility must be confirmed rather than assumed. WeTech checks the cut-out, weather exposure, door hardware, power, release circuit, cabling and condition before identifying what is safe and practical to retain.

Does a modern video intercom always require a monthly fee?+

No single rule applies. On-premises calling, telephone service, cellular paths, cloud video, mobile apps, administrator portals and support can each have different recurring costs, so the proposal should identify every ongoing charge and what stops working if a service is cancelled.

How much disruption should residents expect during an occupied-building retrofit?+

Disruption depends on whether work is limited to common entrances or includes every suite. A practical transition plan defines notices, temporary access, testing, resident enrollment, after-hours security and a rollback path before the old system is removed.

02

Resident calling and visitor entry

Calling options should serve residents with different phones, abilities and comfort levels.

Can an apartment buzzer call a cell phone instead of a landline?+

Often yes. Telephone-based enterphones may call a compatible local mobile number, while modern video intercoms may call an app, telephone number or indoor monitor; the building's telephone service, dialing rules and selected platform determine the exact behaviour.

Can one intercom call more than one resident or family member?+

Many modern systems support more than one configured user or calling path, but the supported number and call sequence vary by platform and plan. Confirm the exact configuration before promising a specific number of phones per suite.

What options are available for residents without smartphones?+

Depending on the design, alternatives can include a telephone call, an indoor monitor, a physical fob, a card, a PIN or staff-assisted access. These options should be agreed before selection so mobile access remains a convenience rather than the only way a resident can enter or answer visitors.

Can residents answer visitors and unlock the door while away from home?+

Compatible app-based systems can support remote video or audio calls and approved door release. The building should define which entrances can be released, how accounts are secured and what alternative works if the resident's phone, internet or app is unavailable.

Can visitors, caregivers or delivery drivers receive temporary access?+

Supported systems can issue time-limited QR codes, PINs or scheduled credentials, sometimes without requiring the visitor to install an app. The property should limit each credential by door, time and use, and decide who is authorized to create or revoke it.

03

Troubleshooting and outages

A ringing phone does not prove that the complete door-release path is working.

Why does the intercom call my phone but pressing 9 does not open the door?+

Possible causes include incorrect DTMF tones, call routing, resident programming, relay settings, door hardware, power or wiring. Troubleshooting should test the call, tone detection, intercom relay and physical lock separately instead of assuming the telephone is the only problem.

Why will a building intercom not call an out-of-province number?+

Some older systems or telephone services are configured for local dialing only, require a specific number format or block long-distance calls. The correct fix may involve programming, the building's phone service or a local forwarding number; it is not always a fault at the resident's phone.

What happens to a video intercom during an internet or power outage?+

Local door credentials may continue during an internet outage while app calls, cloud management or remote release stop. A power outage depends on the controller, intercom, network, lock and backup-power design, so each function should be documented and tested rather than described as universally available.
