Why UHF Stickers Are Changing Parkade Access

How long-range vehicle credentials work and what a building should review before choosing them.

A UHF parkade system uses a managed long-range RFID credential—usually a windshield tag—to identify an authorized vehicle before it reaches the gate. Reliable performance depends on a controlled lane read zone, not simply the longest advertised distance.

What happens as the vehicle approaches

The reader energizes a compatible tag, receives its identifier and sends it to access control. If the credential is valid for that lane and schedule, the controller requests the gate to open. Gate safety devices remain responsible for monitoring movement and obstructions.

Why commissioning matters

Reader height, antenna angle, output power, windshield construction, tag position, adjacent lanes and vehicle speed all affect the read. WeTech tests representative vehicles and intentionally limits the detection zone when a longer zone could create unwanted reads.

Plan the credential transition

UHF tags can coexist with secure remotes, mobile release and pedestrian credentials. Each vehicle credential should have an assigned owner, status and cancellation procedure so sold or unreturned tags do not remain active.

UHF and LPR solve different problems

UHF reads an enrolled RFID credential. Licence-plate recognition reads an image of a plate. UHF is normally more predictable for resident access; LPR requires camera geometry, imaging, policy and exception handling. Some properties use UHF for the access decision and CCTV for visual context.
